ECO REFRESCH
Creating order amongst the chaos.
This new season has many of us feeling whiplashed, by the weather, the world, and the day to day of it all. I know I am. I have found myself cleaning up my spaces to create some order in the chaos. In fact, research from Department of Neuroscience at Princeton University suggests that “physical clutter in your surroundings competes for your attention, resulting in decreased performance and increased stress.”
The next two months are the perfect time for a closet clean-out. A great tried and true book I principle my work with is Marie Kondo’s “The Art of Tidying Up.”
Here are some key takeaways:
KonMari Method: Categorizes items rather than going room by room. The main categories are clothing, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and sentimental items. Break those down into sub categories and go one at a time. I always start with dresses, then blazers/coats, tops, and bottoms.
Spark Joy: One of the central tenets of Kondo's philosophy is to keep only those items that "spark joy." This requires individuals to assess their belongings and connect with what truly brings them happiness. Those pants that you always put on and say they are “standing jeans only”.. how pratical are they- do they make you feel joyful?
Tidying as a Lifestyle: Kondo believes tidying is not just a one-time event, but a lifestyle change. It involves creating habits and practices that encourage ongoing decluttering and organization. People that make their beds every morning are more likely to get good sleep, report higher levels of job satisfaction, and feel more accomplished.
Storage Solutions: The book offers practical storage tips, such as vertical folding techniques for clothing, proper stacking methods, and the importance of designated homes for every item. This does not mean you need more, you just can see everything with better methods for storage.
Mindfulness and Gratitude: Kondo encourages readers to approach tidying with mindfulness and gratitude, expressing thanks to items that no longer serve a purpose before letting them go. And to keep your gratitude up, consider donating your high value items to Repurpose for a tax write off and passing on other items to amazing NGO’s like Bottomless Closet or Strive
Visual Impact: The aesthetic aspect of tidying is highlighted, as an organized space can lead to increased clarity, inspiration, and motivation in daily life.
Emotional Attachment: Kondo discusses the emotional dimensions of possessions and how to navigate the ties that bind us to certain items, helping readers make more thoughtful decisions. Just because you let go of the sweater that you wore when your child took her first steps doesn’t mean the memory of those steps will disappear too.
If this process seems too overwhelming to do on your own, I have a tried and true team of expert organizers and stylists to help you with the process of decluttering and finding your own unique style that sparks joy while being conscious and mindful on how you consume for the season ahead.
